Hillside Avenue is the dominant corridor — wide, straight and signalized at long intervals, which encourages exactly the speeds that make a crossing dangerous. Jamaica Avenue carries the commercial and bus traffic. Francis Lewis Boulevard and 188th Street run north-south. Hollis Avenue cuts diagonally through the grid. The residential streets between them are narrow and parked on both sides, so a vehicle turning in from a boulevard has little room and less warning.
