Car Accident Lawyer in Hollis, NY
Hollis runs from Hillside Avenue down to Murdock Avenue, between 181st Street and Francis Lewis Boulevard. It is a neighborhood of one- and two-family homes cut through by commuter traffic: buses heading to the Jamaica hub, Long Island drivers using Hillside and Jamaica Avenues as an alternative to the parkways, and the LIRR running through the middle of it. That mix shapes the crashes that happen here.

Crash Corridors in Hollis
Hillside Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard is the neighborhood's main transfer point. MTA buses — the Q1, Q2, Q3, Q36, Q43, Q76, Q77 and Q82 run along Hillside — meet Nassau County's NICE buses, which stop at this corner. People cross quickly to make transfers, and drivers turning from Francis Lewis onto Hillside have to watch for both buses and pedestrians at once.
Jamaica Avenue carries the Q110 and steady through traffic toward the Nassau line. Double-parked delivery trucks and cars pulling out of curbside spots are the recurring problem; a driver who swings out to pass a stopped truck can collide with oncoming traffic or a cyclist.
Hollis Avenue and Farmers Boulevard carry traffic south toward St. Albans and southeast Queens. Hollis Avenue at 205th Street — co-named Run-DMC JMJ Way in 2009 for the group that came out of this neighborhood — is one of the corners where local drivers and through traffic mix.
The blocks around the Hollis LIRR station at 193rd Street and Woodhull Avenue see commuters walking to and from trains at rush hour, often across streets without signals. If you were hit as a pedestrian, our pedestrian accident page explains how those claims differ from a car-on-car crash.
What to Do After a Hollis Crash
Hollis is covered by the NYPD 103rd Precinct at 168-02 91st Avenue in Jamaica. Call 911 if anyone is hurt; otherwise exchange license, registration and insurance information and photograph the documents. Note any bus number, delivery company or livery plate on the other vehicle — commercial vehicles carry different insurance, and the details are hard to recover later.
For medical care, Queens Hospital Center is a few minutes west. Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Medical Center are both state-designated Level I trauma centers within reach. See a doctor promptly even for soreness that seems minor; whiplash and back injuries often show their full extent days later, and the medical record from the first visit is what connects them to the crash.
The Crash Report
Order the police report from the state DMV through its crash report page once it is available, usually within a few weeks. If police did not come and someone was hurt, every driver involved must file an MV-104 within ten days. Mistakes in the report — the wrong lane, a missing witness, an incorrect plate — are easier to fix early.
How a Claim Is Paid
In New York, your own car insurance pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages first, no matter who caused the crash. That is the no-fault system under Insurance Law §5103, and the application is due within thirty days. To recover for pain and suffering from the other driver, the injury must qualify as "serious" under Insurance Law §5102(d) — a fracture, a permanent limitation, or a significant limitation of use of a body function or system, among other categories.
If you were a passenger in a dollar van, a livery car or a rideshare on Hillside Avenue, the coverage picture changes, and there may be more than one policy involved. We work through which one pays first.
When Fault Is Disputed
At a busy transfer corner, each driver often blames the other or the bus. Under CPLR §1411, your recovery is reduced by your share of the fault. Since a 2026 amendment, a motor-vehicle injury claim is barred if your share of the fault is greater than the other side’s; that rule governs any lawsuit filed on or after May 26, 2026, even if the accident happened earlier. Store cameras along Hillside and Jamaica Avenues and onboard bus video can settle these disputes, but both get recorded over, so ask early.
Filing Deadlines and the Court
The general deadline for a lawsuit against another driver is three years under CPLR §214. If the other vehicle belonged to the city or the MTA, or a road defect played a part, a notice of claim is due within 90 days. Cases from Hollis are filed at Queens County Supreme Court, Civil Term at 88-11 Sutphin Boulevard, a short ride west.

Common questions
I was hit by a NICE bus at Hillside Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard. Is that an MTA claim?
No. NICE is Nassau County's bus system, operated separately from the MTA, so the claim runs against a different operator and insurer even though the crash happened in Queens. Short notice deadlines can apply to claims involving public transit, so it is worth acting quickly.
The other driver left before police arrived. What now?
Write down anything you remember about the car and call the police to report it. If the driver is never identified, your own policy's uninsured motorist coverage, or New York's MVAIC fund, may still provide benefits, but both have strict notice requirements. Our hit-and-run page covers the details.
Can I talk to someone in Spanish?
Yes. Hablamos Español. Call (718) 328-8001 and let us know you would prefer to speak in Spanish.
